Red Dead Redemption 2 Xbox Series X|S upgrade cancelled — report

By Tom West,

Red Dead Redemption 2 was reportedly in the running for an Xbox Series X|S and PS5 upgrade, presumably like Grand Theft Auto V, but Rockstar looks to have cancelled those plans.

If you had hopes of trekking across the Old West with Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2, rustling wild horses and filling outlaws (or innocents) with lead from your trusty revolvers in glorious 60FPS, then we come bearing ill tidings for you. According to reliable insider Tez2 (thanks, VGC), Rockstar Games had planned to work on an Xbox Series X|S and PS5 upgrade but have since shelved it, presumably to focus on the development of Grand Theft Auto 6.

GTA IV, Red Dead Redemption, and Red Dead Redemption 2 upgrades cancelled

Last week Rockstar announced that it's changing the way it supports Red Dead Redemption 2 in the future and that we can expect to no longer see "major" updates added to the game as the team is focusing its efforts on Grand Theft Auto 6. It comes as no surprise then that Rockstar won't be releasing an Xbox Series X|S upgrade for the game like that of Grand Theft Auto V's latest upgrade, and as such, no 60FPS gameplay.

According to Tez2, though, there were plans to work on an upgrade, but the plans have currently been shelved alongside an Enhanced Rockstar Editor, most likely due to the studio having all hands on deck for the new GTA.

Tez2 only last week said that plans for Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption remasters had been scrapped, potentially due to the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy's poor reception, this was corroborated by Kotaku a couple of days later, noting that development on GTA6 was also a contributing factor.

Will you remain hopeful that a Red Dead Redemption 2 upgrade will come in the future, or are you happy to leave it be? Let us know down in the comments!
